Broadfoot's
Unit
Record Search __ The
Unit
Records
we provide were transcribed from the National Archives microfilm
records M594 and M861 and are contained in our publication, the
Supplement
to the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies.
These records relate to the stations, movements, or activities of each
unit, or part of that unit. The detailed and corrected transcripts
of the original records and reports tell where each unit was organized
and provide accounts of where the soldiers were sent, the battles they
participated in, and their trials and tribulations throughout the war. |
These records include details regarding detachments, scouting expeditions,
foraging dispatches, and other small sorties, which can often explain why
there are differing locations recorded for the same time-frame of a unit. |
Though
not all units have complete records for their entire service, there are
usually three sections in the Unit Records: Field and Staff, Regimental,
and Company accounts. You will receive all of the content that is
available for the unit specified. |
You can easily track your soldier through the Civil War via his Unit Records.
The records detail the locations and dates of the unit and and can provide
interesting information regarding battles, marches, weather, losses sustained,
desertions, executions, camp illness, etc. |

A
Unit Record, the official account of assignment locations for
the Union or Confederate military unit is a transcription from that unit's
microfilmed record entitled "Compiled Records Showing Service of Military
Units. . . ."
In 1890, the War Department began compiling histories of the Union volunteer
military organizations serving during the Civil War. These compiled
records for each organization were called "Record of Events" and contained
abstracts of the information found on muster-in and muster-out rolls for
the units. Starting in 1903, the War Department began to compile abstract
histories of the movements and activities of the Confederate units.
The principal sources of data for Confederate organizations were the original
muster rolls and returns, as well as the rosters, payrolls, hospital registers,
casualty lists, prison registers, parole rolls, and inspection reports.
Unit Records provide information regarding the stations, movements, activities,
organization, composition, strength and losses, and disbandment of the
units. Additionally, there are frequent glimpses into the day-today
life of the soldiers. Location stations, muster-in dates and personnel,
distances between location assignments, orders received, enemy engagements,
losses sustained, unit nicknames, and terms of service are just some of
the many details provided in the unit histories.
Usually the Union records are more complete than the Confederate records,
but many of the Confederate units also include rosters of officers.

Soldier's UNIT: We will need to know the unit in which
your soldier served. These are usually numbered regiments or battalions
(such as 26th N.C. Infantry or 1st Indiana Cavalry) but may also be a named
unit, such as the Washington Artillery. Please note the "type" of
unit: Infantry, Artillery, Cavalry, Sharpshooters, Engineers, etc.
If you do not know the unit in which your soldier served, we suggest purchasing
our
SOLDIER SEARCH

Units
for Unit Record Research
|
Most units have at least a partial record available. The majority
of Civil War military units were state affiliated with a state, but there
were some units which were not from a particular state, such as the U.S.
Colored Troops. Please check the charts below to determine if your
soldier's unit is available for a Unit Record search. If your soldier
was in a unit from a state that provided both Union and Confederate troops,
please note whether Conf. or Union: |
